Help me give my students the support they need in the often unmet area of sensory. Studies show you have the ability to decrease inappropriate behaviors with an increase in sensory input for those with Sensory Processing Disorders.
The students I teach fall under the beautiful umbrella of the Autism Spectrum. My students range from low to high functioning and are both verbal and non verbal. Some with anxiety and or behavioral challenges which make for EXCITING, UNPREDICTABLE, but predictable days.
Each student is so different and has their own unique interest from hangers, balls, and FOOD to straws, paper, and COKES.
They're awesome and appreciate the small things in life. The one thing that I have found is that EVERY ONE of my students enjoys is music. No matter how low the social skills or how high the anxiety when they hear a song they like, they are quick to sing and dance. That is the best part of the day seeing them just having fun and enjoying themselves and each other.
My Project
My class functions best when their senses are stimulated and sensory needs are met. Some ways I plan to use the items are working followed by water marble breaks, or working while their feet are in sand, doing work while sitting on a Flex-Space Wobble Cushion , learning to count while finding letters in a sensory box of foam paint. Making work fun while hitting on different needs of the students and decreasing unstructured time is the purpose of these items. These will also decrease behavior in my class and will increase social skills, communication, attention, transition skills, organisation, time management, emotional control and frustration.
Fun, Excitement, and movement supports learning in my class.
With an increase in students in my class these items will be able to support all of my students in a way like never before.
