I teach in a self-contained autism classroom. My students are in my classroom all day. My students have needs in the areas of academic skills, communication, fine and gross motor, functional and social/emotional skills.
Despite the challenges that my students face, they are incredibly resilient.
Their vivacious personalities, zest for life, and boldness are a huge part of our school culture. They do not let developmental delays or poverty get in the way of their learning.
Our school is a culturally diverse school in St. Paul, Minnesota. Our school serves over 600 students in grades pre-kindergarten through grade 5. We have a Language Academy (LA) program, which is designed for new immigrant students, some of whom may have limited or interrupted formal education.
96.5% of our students are students of color, 88.4% of our students qualify for free/reduced-price lunch, 13.5% of our students receive special education services, and 58.2% of our students are English language learners.
Our school provides students with rigorous academics, featuring vocal and instrumental music education, while building family and community partnerships in a welcoming environment that together will inspire future leaders.
My Project
My students benefit greatly from sensory experiences throughout their school day. We have a sensory table in our classroom that we use daily. Currently, we use rice, pom poms, feathers, and pipe cleaners in our sensory table. I am hoping to expand the materials we put into our sensory table. I would love to be able to add in these materials.
Sensory supports are so important in my classroom!
These sensory beads, sensory balls, sensory noodles, and kinetic sands would be an amazing addition to our classroom! The plastic bins would help us organize and sort the materials when they are not in use. We utilize our sensory table during sensory times and academic times. We work on skills such as pouring and scooping with spoons and shovels to work on our motor skills. We also work on matching, counting, identifying objects, etc. There are so many opportunities and skills we can use our sensory table for. Please help us expand the materials we can utilize in our sensory table.
