My students need learning tools that involve more of their senses such as the sensory letters and learning noodles. The science folders will help them demonstrate a mastery of new science lessons.
I teach a class of kindergarten to second grade students with moderate to severe disabilities in a special day class. These disabilities range from orthopedic impairment to intellectual disabilities and autism. Many of my students struggle with fine motor movement and can get frustrated when trying a new activity.
They are all lively, cute, and typically always ready and willing to learn.
My students constantly need extra sensory input. They have a difficult time modulating their own systems, and often need some sensory activities to help calm them down when they are having a rough day.
My Project
My students need learning materials that present the information in multiple ways. Having letters they can feel can help some of my students learn their letters by tracing over the letters with their fingers, or putting paper over the tactile letter and writing the letter with their pencil, feeling the tactile letter underneath.
Sensory integration is very important for my students.
Many of my students need sensory breaks to help keep them calm, the sensory noodles will help give them another option for a different sensory experience.
The science folders will allow my students to demonstrate a mastery of a new skill once they have learned that lesson as many of them cannot talk or write.
