Our school is unique in that we serve a very diverse community of special needs students. Most of our students come from low-income households, and have mild to severe learning and/or physical disabilities. I work with three year old students that have autism. Their capabilities far outweigh their disabilities!
These kiddos are so bright and fun, full of love and energy.
Many of them have sensory processing disorders and cannot regulate their emotions the way "typical" children their age can. My goal is to provide experiences through play, sensory, and exploration.
With the diverse needs of my students, I would like to offer them a learning environment that is safe and fun.
My Project
With opportunities to play with sensory objects, our special students will feel a sense of security and meaningful play. Sensory items will allow the students to engage in learning through their senses. Students will play with materials that allow them to learn through sight, touch, sound and smell.
We take for granted how essential our senses are to us.
These little ones rely on their senses to regulate emotions, express their feelings, and engage and interact with people in their environment. Play is truly "child's work" and these sensory items will allow them to make connections to the world around them. The art materials will provide students the ability to create expressive art, and the storage items will allow these materials to be safety stored for easy accessibility in our room.
