My students make up six incredible classes of biology, and each individual class brings in a personality all its own. That being said, it's almost unanimous that my students enjoy and learn from hands-on labs and relevant visuals. They thrive on identifying cause and effect in experiments they perform. My students are incredibly diverse in their backgrounds and goals, but as a STEM teacher in an Academies-based high school, we all focus on STEM and how it can impact our futures.
Harsh fluorescent lights are draining. They can contribute to headaches, overstimulate the senses, and give a sterile feel to a classroom. A lot of students even prefer having half of the lights out instead of having full light, which can contribute to vision issues and make it harder for some students to focus.
By putting up sensory light filters, I can give my students a softer environment to work in that doesn't overstimulate them and provides a more relaxing atmosphere.
It is my hope that this will make my classroom a little more homey for my students, and therefore a place they enjoy learning in.
