Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our neighborhood school services students in PreK through 6th grade and has continually achieved an "A" or "Excelling" rating. In my journey to transition back to the special education classroom teacher from the general education classroom teacher, I would like to be able to provide students with a safe and homey classroom vibe. I want each of my students to know that they are cared for and loved. I strive every day to build strong relationships with my students and to create a culturally relevant learning experience for them all.
As an 8th year teacher of both special education and general education, I know that all students don't learn the same way and they each need their own supplies still as we can’t share anymore.
One of my big focus factors is and true keys to learning regardless of the general education or special education environment is to have flexibility with the different students and their ability levels. It is very important to me to foster my students' different learning styles in a unique way that best makes sense to them in a SAFE, positive, and rewarding environment.
My Project
Hands-on learning engages students to interact with material and enhances their ability to retain information. It also helps students develop their fine motor skills as well as calm their bodies. This is especially important for students with autism or other special learning needs.
Through the use of these sensory oriented items, my students will have a greater ability to retain information through the use of stem bins (I can place the beads in beans and students would have to pull out a specific letter and then write that letter) that will be put together with task list items for them to complete.
The different kits from Lakeshore will be used to deepen previously taught letter or number skills while allowing students to engage in a game of their choice to further develop those skills using fine motor skills. The pencil grips will help to teach students how to effectively hold a pencil and hopefully will be able to be "taken away" after they develop the skill.
These learning tools promote fine motor development, organization of color, shapes, and ideas, and improve problem-solving skills. With your help, we will be providing these hands-on learning tools that will give the students numerous opportunities to explore and play all while learning.
