Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a special needs Deaf Ed classroom in Dallas, Texas. My students are smart, sassy, and spirited. They are funny, fierce, and free. Our kids teach us something new everyday! Their curiosity drives our research and passion to find everything they need and want for learning. My students have many obstacles such as intellectual disabilities, reading difficulties, inability to focus, and other impairments. They also have the most empathy, the biggest hearts, and the greatest desire to learn.
In less than 4 months, they have stolen our hearts and challenged our minds to the max.
This is the fastest group of students to find their way to my heart. This is my tenth year teaching and my first year with this type of classroom. It's been a huge learning curve for all of us. Support for their learning is crucial and urgent. They need and deserve every educational opportunity before they become adults in our community. Any and all resources and materials to help our students would be greatly appreciated!
My Project
Our students need movement while learning that allows them to be seated and focused on what they are supposed to be doing. Regular chairs are hard and don't move easily for students with fine motor difficulties. The yoga ball chairs that we have selected will help our students by giving them a better way to release their energy. Making sure students are comfortable as they learn is important. Hands-on items such as sensory mats and readers help make information tactile, visual, and engaging! Sensory mats allow students to spend some of their energy and calm down. Readers will help students be more excited about practicing their reading skills and make the text more clear for them.
My students need to move around the room and be able to work in different places.
Being able to use our fully charged iPads will be great! The media cart will allow us to do that while keeping our technology safe. They are more engaged and get more work completed than when they are just sitting at their table. Some of our students pace or work standing up. Our room is small and we have a large group of students with limited staff. Having the appropriate places to put away items will be so helpful. Your assistance in getting these materials will be greatly appreciated!
