I work in a Title I school in southern Maryland, two hours south of Washington DC. I teach in a regional program for students grade 1-5 who have significant disabilities. The disabilities can include autism, significant intellectual disorders, and blind/ multi-handicapped. The students range from verbal to nonverbal. Currently all are ambulatory. I have several students who can be aggressive towards staff and other students, and a majority of the students have sensory needs. These sensory needs can interfere with their ability to understand spoken words, sit and attend or react to light and sounds in a "normal" way. They come from various backgrounds with some living in local shelters to typical households. Some students live in a single family household while others have both parents and brothers and sisters.
The students are a great group with hidden talents and infectious laughter.
They are warm, mysterious and fun to be with.
My Project
The requested seat cushion set offers students the ability to sit and attend while still moving. A majority of my students have sensory needs that interfere with their ability to sit and attend. I choose the variety of seat cushions to give the students a choice to what assist them in sitting. Having a variety of items that they can use will let them sit and attend to lessons and focus on their work better.
The Chewy Tubes are for my students who need to chew.
These chews offer a safe alternative to pencils, papers, and materials.
Having available to the students a wide variety of seating and chew options will ensure that the students' sensory needs are meet to assist them in focusing and attending to lessons and self-guided work.
