Help me give my students various sensory items such as a body sock, fluorescent light filters, bouncy chair bands, and loop scissors so I can endure that the sensory needs of my students are met!
I love my students and I’m so lucky to be their teacher! I teach a second and third-grade, special education class with twelve students. My school is located in a first-ring suburb in Western New York. My students primarily have developmental disabilities and are working on basic academics as well as life skills. Most of my students receive physical therapy, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy and counseling.
My students amaze me every day.
They work very hard throughout the day and thrive in school when given consistency and predictable routines. My students also greatly benefit from multiple opportunities to move around and let out energy. Many of my students have difficulty sitting still for long periods of time, so frequent opportunities to let them move helps them be more successful in my class! I strive to be the best teacher I can be, and provide my students with materials that will help them work to their full potential.
My Project
My students have various sensory needs that need to be met throughout the day. Some of my kids need to move throughout the day, some are sensitive to bright lights, and some have fine motor difficulties. All of these needs can be met with light filters, bouncy chair bands, and loop scissors. When student sensory needs are met, students are more likely to focus for longer periods of time and they are less likely to struggle with behavior difficulties. Having dimmer lights throughout the day will be very helpful for all of my students because they are all sensitive to the harsh fluorescent lights.
