My students need items such as a rocking chair and fidgets to help regulate their sensory needs. They need sensory and fidget items to help with sitting and attending.
Each of my eight students has unique sensory needs. The use of fine motor and gross motor sensory items is very beneficial for regulating their sensory needs. Some of my students are non-verbal and having a multitude of sensory materials would be extremely helpful in assisting them self-regulate.
I have eight wonderful students who are on the autism spectrum.
I am a learning behavior specialist and this is my third year as a special education teacher. I enjoy working with the students and learning their needs as each day is different and unique in its own way.
Truly, each school day is unique in that the students have changing needs and wants on a daily to weekly basis. The students range in abilities and have wonderful exceptionalities. With that, a lot of my students have issues with communication and are not able to express when they are upset or need additional support. It is up to me and my amazing team of paraprofessionals to assess situations quickly and regulate sensory needs using fine and gross motor sensory items.
My Project
The materials will be used in the classroom to help create a calming and tranquil atmosphere. I am hoping to build a sensory area so that the students have a safe place to go in the room when they need a moment away from the classroom noise. The materials will add a fun and calming component to the room!
The use of the rocking chair in particular will help when students request a break in the sensory area. They can use the chair and fidgets I am requesting to self-soothe and calm themselves while staying safe in a fun calm and fun atmosphere.
Thank you in advance for looking at my page.
