My Students
I teach children with varying exceptionalities, such as specific learning disabilities, autism, vision impairment, and cerebral palsy. My students are at least two grade levels behind their same age peers.
We are a Title I school which means many of the children come from impoverished backgrounds. They have parents that are absentee, intellectually disabled, or not well educated. Many students are part of the Hunger Project which helps feed them on weekends.
In my room, the students are able to work on their level and at the pace they need. We are trying to ensure that they get the most out of their education.
My Project
My students have very different learning styles than students who attend General Education class.
Students in my room require sensory experiences in order to grow and learn. We are constantly using Dry Erase Markers to allow students with weak fine motor skills to practice their handwriting in a less stressful way than pencil/paper. We will use Candy Scented Dough and Alphabet Dough Mats when we introduce and teach the alphabet. Students will also use the Dot Painters to create the letters of the alphabet, and trace sight words. The finger paints will be used for writing their names, as well as sensory play. Students will use Jumbo Craft Sticks, Squish and Squeeze Sensory Beads, and paint poured in No-Spill Cups during our STEAM Friday centers.
