Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a group with diverse learning capabilities. I enjoy every day that I come to work because no two days are the same. I am a special education teacher at a fantastic elementary school. My responsibility is to bridge any gap that any one of these students may encounter. When it comes to academics some tasks present themselves to be very mundane and monotonous, so I try to add some spice to it by incorporating technology or using kagan structures, or even throw in a board game. My students respond really well to the variety of ways that I teach them a concept, they are always very courteous, eager to learn and grateful, which warms my heart!
My Project
We have a sensory room next to my classroom. I have so many students who have sensory issues and become very upset very quickly due to over stimulation. Right now we are very limited as to what we can offer a student to soothe them in this room and these items would be greatly used and appreciated. Sensory resources allow students the opportunity for a better educational experience, and I want my students to have the best educational opportunity available.
The calming fiber optic lights offer the students an opportunity to relate their feelings to the color of the light and express the relationship between the two.
The balance board gives them an opportunity to focus their energy elsewhere. The diffuser will allow a calming scent to be provided to the student. The lamps will allow the student to be able to sit in an ambient location without the harsh fluorescent light that hurt their eyes. The wooden gym, DNA Stress Ball, and Liquid Motion Bubbler Fidget Toy give students an outlet for thinking about something else instead of their frustration.
