My students need sensory materials such as a sand table, sensory sand, water beads, and wobble stools to help students with mental health needs as they learn how to regulate their emotions and calm down safely.
My students are an extremely diverse group of learners. They face unique challenges, and their basic needs must be met before they can unlock their true potential.
As a special education teacher in a high poverty district, 90% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch and 14% of the school population meets the criteria to be identified as homeless.
School is a place for my students to feel safe and loved, while they work on learning skills they need.
My Project
Many of my students have mental health needs that go unaddressed in the general education classroom and lead to outbursts.
This often looks like poor behavior, but is really a cry for help as these students do not know how to self regulate.
With sensory materials such as a sand table, sensory sand, and water beads, my students will be able to calm down safely in the resource environment when they become overwhelmed by their emotions. Wobble stools will provide flexible seating options within the resource classroom, while the happiness journals and "Inside Out" character books will be used in social skills instruction where direct instruction in replacement behaviors will take place. In other words, my students will get to look at positives in their lives while they learn that everyone experiences all emotions and that is okay, as long as we do it safely!
