My Project

Here at APA, We believe that every child is unique. In order to support every student, we need many different tools. One of the tools that APA provides is a Student Support Room. The room is maintained by a Behavioral Coach; Cara Weber, and myself, the Student Support Tech Lindsay Smith. Our goal is to provide an environment where we can help students learn different ways to positively acknowledge their emotions throughout the day. We plan on doing this by integrating sensory tools for students. Some examples would be Calming strips that can be provided to students who might focus better when their hands are quietly doing something. We also would like to invest in other sensory tools such as stress balls, weighted blankets, pop-it sheets and quiet mesh fidgets. Another tool we would like to utilize would be alternative seating. By this we would like to have stretchy bands to put on the chair legs for students to kick and pull on with their feet, as well as some wiggle stools that could provide support to the students that struggle to sit still in a traditional chair. In addition to that we would also like to provide wiggle seats that could be used either in our Student Support Room or be able to provide them to a classroom for an individual student.

While working with our students, we have discovered that sometimes just providing something to help them channel the extra energy is all they need to focus and to be able to work hard on their school work.

By helping the students focus better, we feel that the students will not only be able to learn to thrive better in the learning environment but could feel more confident in doing so. Thank you for your consideration.
