Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a Special Education teacher. I teach an SLD class in a Title I school in Los Angeles, CA. My classroom is composed of students with autism, intellectual disability, and ADHD, among other learning disabilities.
However, despite their disabilities, my students are very eager to learn.
They come to school ready to learn and always try their best. They have the capacity to learn with different modalities and I try to make the accommodations necessary to help meet their needs.
My Project
It is important for students to have a special place where they can go to manage their emotions or help them refocus. Having a sensory center will allow my students to practice managing their emotions in an appropriate way.
Becoming and remaining calm during anger is an important skill for children to learn.
When we are angry, our brains go into the fight, flight, or freeze response and we have limited access to logic and reasoning, which leads us to react without thinking. The purpose of the sensory center is to allow the brain to calm down so that the thinking part of the brain can engage again. For this reason, I would like my students to have access to items such as magnetic building tiles, kinetic sand, and play-doh to help them refocus specially my students that have ADHD. These students can kinetically use their energy by creating. My students that are diagnosed with autism and ADHD can benefit from the chair fidget bands that can help them improve and focus in the classroom. Some of my students can benefit from the artificial aquarium fish tank and liquid timers because as research says animals are therapeutical and the timers help them relax and at the same time help with time management. These items for our sensory center will help my students tremendously to refocus so that they can engage in their academic growth.
