My students need LED Bubble Tubes, Child Pod Swing Chair, sensory shape mat, soothing pat mat, and silly shapes sensory mats to build a sensory room for my students with Autism.
My day is never a typical day. I teach students with autism and autism spectrum disorders. The biggest challenge in my classroom is keeping my students engaged in learning. Our school has over sixteen different languages spoken and seventy-four percent of the students are at risk of educational failure. I work with students who have special needs and their abilities vary from non-verbal to socially isolated. Students in my program do not learn through traditional teaching methods. Their materials need to be engaging and offer my students spatial awareness to stay on task.
My students are eager to learn; I just need materials to help them.
My students face a variety of learning and behavioral challenges every day. They have diverse learning skills and needs. Having hands-on learning materials for my students to use when they are struggling to learn is essential.
My Project
Instead of causing disruption or exploding behaviors, the sensory materials will allow my students the opportunity to cool down and redirect their own behaviors in a positive way. The sensory play mat materials will allow my students who have Sensory Processing Disorders the ability to self-regulate their own behaviors in a positive way without being aggressive. The LED bubble tubes will allow my students to have access to an activity that will allow them be engage, stay calm, and build coping skills. The soothing pat mat will allow my students the ability to stay calm and refocus their energy. This activity will allow my students to be more relaxed, stay calm, and become ready to continue working on their academic learning goals once the activity is done. The swing will allow my students with Autism a consistent moving motion which also helps them to calm down. My goal for my classroom is to have a sensory area where students can step away for a few minutes, be engage in sensory stimulation and return to working on learning goals within 15-20 minutes. After recovering from Hurricane Harvey most of my students are already agitated. Building a sensory room will help them stay calm while still learning.
Calming tools, such as, the washable sensory materials and swing and a Peapod Junior will help my students learn to self-regulate their negative behaviors on their own.
It will reduce stress, decrease disruption, and create a positive, safe, learning environment for all of my students to learn at their fullest potential. My students need to have a safe alternative to let out their negative behaviors and these materials are ideal for my students who are learning and behavior challenged.
