My Project

We are a PreK-6 school in rural central Indiana. We are home to a diverse population of students-English language learners, different socio-economic backgrounds, and a large variety of leveled learners. We have worked extremely hard to transform areas of our school building into inviting, engaging, and enriching classrooms, sensory rooms, playgrounds and paths. My goal is to combine my love of landscaping and the outdoors, and share it with my students. I am passionate about providing a Sensory Garden not only for students with special emotional needs and sensory services, but also a greenspace to be shared with the ENTIRE school community where we can learn and GROW together.

Our goal, with your help, is to design a SENSORY GARDEN that will encourage the WHOLE child to learn and take an active role in the environment around them.

We will teach them that planning and growing the space around them can positively change the way they feel, while also teaching responsibility and life long skills.

Our newly developed space will include elements of:

Sight: We will plant climbing vines and plants with root systems to show height and depth to different plants. The grow bags and raised boxes will make this possible.

Touch: Sensory gardens provide students with the opportunities to explore natural textures through touch. We will achieve this using plants like ornamental grass and recycling water in rain barrels.

Scent: We will use scented and fragrant shrubs and flowers, such as lemon balm and peppermint which produce distinct smells.

Taste: We hope to include fruits, vegetables, mint, and edible flowers to our garden.

Sound: Our garden will include handmade birdhouses (hung on our brick courtyard wall) that will attract birds and butterflies. Wind chimes will be used to engage and connect our students from all walks of life!
