Imagine being 5 years old in a new environment with new demands being placed on you, trying to make it through a school day when every sensation in the environment causes you stress.
My students range in age from 5-10 years old, most demonstrating difficulty organizing and processing sensory information from their environment.
Most have mild to severe expressive, receptive, pragmatic (social) language deficits and/or feeding problems. These deficits make it very difficult to actively engage in a 7 hour school day.
My Project
These sensory/oral motor tools each serve a purpose in improving speech, language, feeding and/or attending which in turn allows them to be more successful in their school and home environments. Fidget toys such as squishy balls and beanbags will allow my students to receive sensory input in appropriate ways. Bubbles will be used to promote speech and language development. Z-vibes, vibration toys and the nook brush will provide my students the oral stimulation they need throughout the day, since many of these children have low oral tone, oral defensiveness, and/or texture aversions.
Providing sensory/oral motor tools to my students will help them engage with their environment.
These tools will stimulate their senses in exciting and fun ways to help them function in a less stressful state of mind.
