My Students

Located in a gentrifying neighborhood between the Brooklyn Navy Yard and Dumbo, our school has long served children who live in the public housing development across the street. Students with special needs from throughout the district come for the school's excellent ASD Horizon program for students on the autism spectrum.

There are ICT (integrated co-teaching) classes in every grade, several self-contained classes for special education students, and several special small classes for students on the autism spectrum in the ASD Horizon program.

Teachers provide personal attention and a gentle atmosphere. One general education student even studies in the ASD classroom because he works better in a smaller, quieter group. The first-grade classroom with cozy corners is dimly lit with music softly playing and all students focused.

My Project

My students are on the autism spectrum and would highly benefit from sensory toys to keep them busy in between transitions!

Anxiety is a bummer but sensory toys save the day!

Using a fidget toy is not a distraction. Rather, it helps my students focus on the task at hand (pun intended). When listening to a book or waiting for the bus, my students would greatly benefit from these quiet hand toys that can keep them calm and focused as they sit. Sensory toys can be like a stress relieving magic wand!
