My students are 1st-3rd grade students in a Comprehensive Academic Unit within an urban, public school on the south side of Milwaukee.
My classroom is a self-contained learning environment for students with orthopedic and intellectual disabilities who require significant academic, behavioral, and functional support.
Many of my students are nonverbal and require hand-over-hand support. Seventy-nine percent of the students at my school are minorities and nearly 80% are economically disadvantaged. Despite incredible challenges, my students come to school each day, and it is my job to excite and foster their love of learning and their desire to improve their reading, math, writing, and functional skills.
My Project
My students have a variety of sensory needs that when met will help encourage greater engagement and participation during the school day.
I have included in this project items that will specifically enhance the classroom experience of each of my students.
For example, I have included a Switch-Adapted Disco Ball for several students who are working on using switches in order to participate in classroom activities. Their limited fine motor and expressive communication skills make typical modes of participation difficult, so we utilize switches and buttons in class, which encourage these students to participate and engage during lessons and classroom activities.
The Disco Ball lights up, so the students will be motivated to press the switch to see it light up and turn!
I have also included Chewlery for several of my students who need to chew on things during the school day. One student chews out of anxiety and needs something like the Chewlery Necklace Bracelet to both stretch and chew on, which helps to relieve her anxiety.
Another student has difficulty sitting and focusing during classroom activities, and he requires a variety of fidgets to keep his hands busy so that his body can be calm. He will enjoy the Pin Art toy (we had one of these before, but it broke) and the Number Sliding Puzzle. He is so intelligent and loves to sort and organize anything and everything. In addition, he may benefit from a Bouncy Band on his chair legs so that he can bounce his feet on the band while seated.
