I teach in a K-6 special education classroom. We are from a small, rural school in Southwest Missouri with little access to outside resources. What they receive in the class is crucial to their development.
Every child is unique, and the way each one thrives and learns is different from the next.
That is why special education classrooms use special ways to teach. I have students in and out of my classroom all day, coming and going from the general education classrooms. My students are tight-knit and work together to learn and reach their goals in reading and math.
My Project
My students are on a four day a week schedule. This can, at times make the day seem daunting and overwhelming to the students. Our students in the special education building need frequent sensory breaks to help them let out some tension and regain their ability to focus and stay calm. Having a sensory area in our school would make this process so much easier.
This area would have the equipment and space needed to fit a routine that can be personalized to each child's need, whether they need ten seconds or ten minutes or sensory input.
Not only can this be used for the special education students, but this can be used to help keep children in their general education classrooms as well, sometimes kids need a quick outlet during the day to be able to focus and function appropriately!
