My Students

My students are a group of amazing high school students who bring so much to the school community. Although, we focus on students’ strengths and unique skills, my students are challenged because of their range of multiple disabilities, including intellectual disabilities and autism spectrum disorder. In addition, they come from low-income homes which makes obtaining necessary supplies difficult. However, my students are eager to learn. The tools they need are essential to support their learning and allow me to effectively teach in my special needs classroom.

Help my students to successfully participate and enjoy school!

The materials will help my student learn how to thrive, be independent, and happy.

My Project

My students have sensory processing disorder which means their brains have trouble organizing information they receive from their senses. Equipment for sensory breaks can help relieve the resulting stress and improve focus for my students with autism as they attempt to learn in a busy classroom environment.

The sensory equipment will allow my learners to self-regulate their emotions and promote learning in the classroom.

A visual timer provides the ability to judge how much time is left of their break without having to know how to tell time. During these breaks, students can meet their sensory needs by laying on a beanbag, bouncing on an exercise ball, or using the tools from the sensory box. The bean bag will provide needed sensory input, promoting body awareness, and helping to organize their brains for focus and attention. It provides deep pressure input when used for activities including snuggling, pushing, pulling, or crashing. The exercise ball and fidget toys offer movement activities and just enough energy to then be able to sit at a table for class. Some of my students enjoy laying on the floor for sensory input. A soft and easy-to-clean mat allows for a safe and sanitary way to fulfill this sensory need.

My learners will gain hours in concentrated learning time because the equipment for the sensory breaks will enable them to focus and concentrate.
