Help me give my students the sensory time to improve academics. Students with severe disabilities often need breaks and time to de-escalate in between work tasks, meltdowns, and stressors from daily schedules. These materials will improve academics.
As a teacher in a rural community with many students from low income families, we face many challenges in meeting each student's needs. The students in my classroom face obstacles each day that many people do not think twice about; however, they each have an amazing and unique personality and offer so much to others. My goal is to make the learning environment one that is rewarding, beneficial, fun, and welcoming for each child who comes through the day.
Our elementary school serves students in the 1-3 grades.
My classroom serves students in each grade level when they are not able to learn with the regular education population. The students love to move but due to physical and mental disabilities often have limited opportunities. Our goal is to put every child in the best position to be successful.
My Project
Students with severe disabilities often struggle with daily tasks and require more breaks than the average child. I have chosen toys that promote free play, social interactions, and will allow students to de-escalate emotionally and mentally so that they can finish academic tasks. Students need activities that interest them and the items chosen apply to the wide range of student needs in the classroom. Using toys such as figurines of animals and characters can increase social skills while allowing students to enjoy learning. Play doh is a great tool to encourage turn taking, exploration, and improve fine motor skills with students with decreased muscle tone and social skills. The storage bins are used to help students stay organized and ensure the toys will last.
