Help me give my students all of the materials to create sensory bottles. This includes seashells, water beads, mineral oil, and food coloring to help them make sense of the world around them.
Our school serves urban students with an increasing number of low income transitory children. The free and reduced price lunch population has risen nearly 10% in the last year alone. Our special education self-contained population has doubled in the last year alone.
These students need access to the same learning opportunities as their peers.
We want to incorporate more project based learning with our self contained students but to level the playing field ALL our kids need access to project materials to be successful.
Our kids love to learn hands on. Giving our special education students the change to make their own sensory bottles or "calm down" bottles that they designed themselves, empowers them.
My Project
These materials will be used in our self-contained classrooms to allow our students to craft their own sensory/calm down bottles. These bottles are filled with water/oil and a variety of glitter, food coloring etc to mesmerize our students. Our self-contained classrooms have students with a variety of diagnoses but all could benefit from this type of calming interaction.
The calming effect of sensory bottles can work miracles for our students who are easily overstimulated or upset.
They are also useful in helping our students practice language skills, math skills, and social skills. These students are not mainstream children and have a variety of special needs that we need to meet to help them be successful.
