Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a third year Emerging Autism Specific teacher in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I teach in a low-income/high poverty school district, all of our students receive free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch. The students face many challenges in and out of the classroom and as a new teacher, I strive to make their time with me a meaningful experience.
I teach a total of seven AMAZING 1st through 5th grade students who are in a emerging Autism program.
My students have limited verbal skills and depend on a lot of visual supports and hands-on materials to help supplement their learning. I am beyond blessed to have each and every student in my class; there is not a day that goes by where they don't amaze me! We have our challenging days but most days are full of laughter, dancing, singing, drawing and most importantly, learning. I believe that there is no small success in my class; we celebrate every academic achievement no matter the size!
My Project
Throughout this school year, my team and I have been faced with some behavior challenges in the classroom. We work with a population of students who are learning to self-regulate when they are upset or angry. Many times, my students need some sensory tools such as a weighted vest or noise-reducing headphones to help calm them down. My students love to do interactive activities where they can relieve some stress or get active. Our school is limited to the resources that they can provide us with but we need some new tools in the classroom!!! I am hoping that this project will be a small step in the right direction to help my students with their emotions!
