Help me give my students items like Hush Buddy Earmuffs, lap pads, popping peepers, and non-spill paint pots to assist with their sensory needs. These purchased items will help reduce anxiety, alleviate stress and make our classroom more harmonious.
My class consists of 13 wonderful students with varying degrees of autism. Some struggle with communication skills, others have processing skills, and all of them have social skills deficits. One thing that all of my students need is the ability to manage their emotions in a socially appropriate manner. These emotions can range from frustrations, to anxiety to sensory seeking behaviors. A common concern for families with autism is the ability to manage emotions and find peace.
My students are struggling with sensory issues.
Several of them have very sensitive ears and need to use noise cancelling head phones to function in the classroom. Since my class is the autism classroom, several general education staff have borrowed our head phones for their own students. We love to share, but that does leave us with not enough for our own students.
My Project
My students with autism have sensory concerns. Many of them have challenges with participating in whole group settings. By using noise cancelling headphones and the lap pads, we can help students feel safer, promote participation, and encourage academic focus.
Loud noises are the most common complaint of students with autism.
By purchasing noise cancelling head phones, students will enjoy and become a part of our general education population in our lunch room setting. These headphones can also help my students participate in school wide assemblies. Many of my students are forced to stay back from inclusive settings due to the noise barriers.
