All the students in my classroom come to school with unique special needs. Each child in my classroom absolutely loves learning. The goal of the classroom is to close developmental gaps, while also teaching social/emotional and adaptive skills intensely. Even though the students have significant emotional, sensory, adaptive, social, and cognitive needs, they are an amazing group of kids who can always make us smile.
They are creative, hardworking, unique, emotional, sensitive, frustrating, and some of the most lovable/compassionate kids you will ever meet.
My Project
One of the biggest challenges my students face in the classroom is negative behaviors due to sensory overload. The students desperately need a designated area to retreat to when the outside world has become too much. A sensory area will allow the students a safe place to go to help them regulate their body and mind. When someone has poor processing of sensory information, they may become quite uncomfortable and begin to display inappropriate behaviors.
The sensory area will provide much-needed alternate lighting, pillows, and fidget toys to provide interventions to assist a student in regulating their moods and behaviors in order to be more successful in the classroom.
