Sensory and Tactile Letters to Promote Literacy

My Project

I have two classes of students, aged 3-5, who present with autism or developmental delays. Both of these classes (maximum of 10 students) meet for 50 minutes twice a week and will learn best if they are learning using auditory, visual, and kinesthetic methods. These students are very eager to learn and although many are non-verbal, they are demonstrating that they are making connections with what we have done so far. However, we require more materials that will support them as they move forward.

My hope is to teach letter names and sounds using wooden letters with fur or "mirrors" glued on to make them more tactile and tap in to their sensory ways of learning.

Currently, we have small cards with letters that have small bumps on them, which they enjoy so far. However, my belief is that we need larger letters to really solidify the letter names and sounds.

The other product here is a spelling practice "game" with squishy letters that will help support the older students who are ready to blend sounds while handling the letters in their hands.
