This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am a special education teacher who sees students grades 4 through 7, and my students all struggle to keep up with grade-level expectations. I have a dynamic mix of students, many of whom need some serious confidence boosting as they have experienced failure at school in the past.
My students all come from Detroit/Detroit Metro and many have had less than stellar educational experiences before coming to our charter school.
This is why many families chose to bring their students to us instead of continuing on at their local public school. I owe it to these families to do everything I can to help their child succeed! The donations we have received have made a huge difference already. I have turned many "I hate books and reading" students into "When do we get time to read again!" students. I'm working every day to keep their motivation going and their confidence building with help from generous donors like you.
My Project
All of my students have disabilities and many have issues with their self-esteem and sensory input (becoming upset or overwhelmed by stimuli in their environment). My students could really use more tools to help build up their self-esteem and to help with becoming overly stimulated during the school day.
I spent a good deal of time researching the items for this project and found some things that I think will make a huge impact on my students with special needs!
For boosting students' self-esteem I found some fun magnetic poetry kits that include encouraging words. I also found a phenomenal game that I know would be used time and time again. It is called, "Totem" and has some terrific reviews. Basically, players all select a card from their hand that best describes the other player and they are all wonderful and encouraging attributes. Plus, as a bonus, the words will make for excellent vocabulary practice as well since the cards feature words such as ingenious, authentic and optimistic. Win win!
For sensory concerns, we could really use some additional fidgets and a new pillow. I purchased some fidgets myself last year and they have been used and used and I had to purge many that were falling apart after being loved just too much! The poor pillow finally fell apart after being sewn multiple times, and I had to toss it as well. I am also including therapy putty and kinetic sand which are incredible tools to have on hand for sensory breaks. Students with ADHD have a hard time tuning out all the extra noise and movement during the day in order to focus, and these items are excellent at helping them regulate themselves and put their best foot forward when learning.
