My students are energetic, creative and capable. They love learning in a safe and supportive environment. When students, staff, and parents walk into my school they feel a sense of family that supports a wide variety of diverse needs. With a population of just under 600 preschool-6th grade students, my school is the largest elementary school in our district. We also have the largest special education population of all elementary schools and most of the high schools. I am a resource teacher who supports the special education population at my school.
The students in my classroom are in K-2nd grades and have a diagnosed disability that affects their ability to access the general education curriculum.
Students enrolled in the resource program are supported in either the traditional Neighborhood Program, utilizing Common Core Standards, or the Open Optional Program where multi-aged "family groups" utilize a self-driven learning style.
My students are diagnosed with a large spectrum of disabilities such as specific learning disability, ADHD, orthopedic impairment, autism, and fetal alcohol syndrome (to name a few). Many of my students have experienced trauma in their lives and have behavioral difficulties. With the correct supports, they are able to reach their full potential.
My Project
I am requesting play sand and auditory feedback phones for my students. My students benefit from frequent breaks in the classroom that are calming and fun. Phonemic awareness can be enhanced when students listen to their own reading.
The play sand can be utilized as a sensory activity for boys and girls of all ages during free choice time.
When other toys are added to the play sand it ignites imagination. Auditory feedback phones can be useful for students to hear their own reading, decoding and blending. Students will utilize these phones during small group reading instruction in the resource classroom.
