I am a special education teacher helping young children reach their highest potential. I have the privilege of teaching 15 energetic, creative, motivated, differently-abled preschoolers with autism at a public school for young children with special needs.
My students thrive on play-based activities to teach them the academic, language, motor, and social skills they will need to better access their world.
Each day they are eager to learn and grow by exploring their environment. My students each have individual needs and learning styles so a variety of engaging and stimulating learning activities are necessary. Many of my students are non-verbal and use picture icons and assistive technology to communicate. My program is language-centered with the goal of helping our students become more independent and able to communicate with the world around them.
My Project
The sensory and art materials will make a difference in my students’ learning by giving them opportunities to help them focus, relax, and experience messy activities they may not have exposure to at home.
Sensory experiences build nerve connections in young children’s brains, allowing them to complete more difficult learning tasks.
Sensory experiences are especially important for children with autism as many children have difficulties processing sensory information such as textures, tastes, brightness, smells, sounds, and movement. This can make everyday situations overwhelming. Incorporating sensory experiences through play can help my students to overcome the sensory challenges they face each day.
