Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students have a highly developed sense of curiosity. My school thrives on integrating the special needs population with the general education population. My students learn basic skills and have a keen sense of abstract ideas. There is no better way to foster friendships and a sense of community!
We are a Title I School in Queens, New York.
We currently have 4 integrated art classes. They come from every corner of the globe, and several students are English Language Learners. Each day our students come to school with bright smiles on their faces, eager to learn.
Several of our students are on the autism spectrum or have Downs Syndrome. By the end of the year, we would like them to reach milestones and to develop a sense of sensitivity and community. To reach these goals, they need sensory learning activities. With the materials that I requested; canvas boards, brushes, tote bags, wiggly eyes, rhinestones, craft sticks, pom poms and a button maker we will create artwork around artists we study; we will begin an "Artist Study" Unit. They will learn about a series of artists from various time periods and geographical locations. We will study the art method by re-creating masterpieces. The button maker will also allow students to promote autism awareness!
My Project
My students are a combination of self-contained special education students and general education students. We have developed a system where we have two parallel art lessons going on so that the two classes can be split. This is a productive way to foster friendships and a sense of community and sensitivity from our students. The students have thrived through this arrangement. They have been able to collaborate with each other for extended periods of time, they have developed a sensitivity to beauty that stands out in what they create as well as in each other.
My students want to create projects and help each other. This program allows the students to figure out each others' talents regardless of gender bias. Our classroom projects give my students the ability to think outside the box while learning about important historical artists. My students truly deserve these resources. I would use the button maker to have students create artistic buttons with themes like autism awareness.
These art supply donations will change my students' lives for the better because these students have the ability to learn, they just need the materials to do so.
Our school is a very deserving, large, low-income and high needs school. It is very difficult to carry out the projects due to the economic constraints of the area. If this project is funded, the students will have the materials needed to have some fun, and to learn and develop a sensitivity that will follow them into adulthood.
