My students are the best, most amazing group of 18 to 21-year-old young adults with a variety of intellectual, developmental, and sensory impairments in our high school's Young Adult Transition Program. My students are focusing their time in school on preparing for life after high school.
My students are looking forward to being as independent as possible after high school.
All of my students participate in internships and jobs around our school building and in the community as part of their education. We also practice interviewing skills, job applications, cooking, cleaning, money, time, and functional writing skills.
Most of my students are looking forward to moving out of their parents' home, working, and being involved in their community when they finish school.
My Project
Fluorescent lighting is the worst! It buzzes, flickers, and causes sensory issues for students with Autism, ADHD, and other neurological disabilities. The light filters that I have selected will help diffuse the light from the fluorescent bulbs making my classroom a calm and inviting environment that accommodates my students with sensory issues.
The balance balls will allow students to sit at a desk but will allow some movement.
These will be extremely beneficial for some students who just need to get the wiggles out! The comfy beanbag chairs will allow for additional comfortable floor seating options. They are lightweight and can be easily used in many areas of the classroom.
In addition, my students with hearing disorders can be sensitive to loud environments and these noise cancelling headphones will accommodate their sensory needs.
