My students are very determined, exciting individuals with special needs: physical, verbal, sensory and/or cognitive. These students range from Pre-K through 6th grade, many of which are being served in this classroom full-time. They each have individual needs that are being met though their own IEP.
These students are hard-working, motivated, and great examples of how perseverance can help you reach your goals.
They are a shining example to every student, teacher, and staff member that everyone is capable of learning. I am very proud to be called their teacher.
My Project
I teach in a very rural part of Oklahoma where the majority of our students come from economically disadvantaged families. They often times come to school without the fine motor, gross motor, verbal, and cognitive skills needed to be successful in the general education classroom. Our school also has not had the budget to provide us with the materials needed for the individual needs of our special education students.
I want my students to be productive active members in their education; therefore, we work on fine motor, gross motor, and other cognitive skills through the use of hands on activities and sensory play.
The scented tutti frutti play dough will help my student who always smells things, want to manipulate those materials, because they have an aversion to the smell of regular play dough. The light up math activity center is helpful for my students who have vision problems be able to have a back light to see their work area better. The stand-up magnetic board is great for my students that need a larger work area and are able to manipulate letters, turn and learn magnetic gears, and other magnetic items onto the board through the use of fine motor skills. I feel through the use of sensory play and hands-on activities, my students can learn to be contributing members of not only my classroom, but of our school in general.
