I have been blessed beyond measure to work with the most incredible kids! My students are 3-5 years old and they all have special needs. The needs of my students vary from kid to kid. Their delays range is severity and developmental area. Despite their challenges, they are happy and eager to learn.
While I may have the title of "teacher", my student are actually teaching me.
I have learned far more from those sweet smiling faces than any formal schooling. They have taught me acceptance, perseverance, patience, and love. Each child is capable of incredible things. They simply require someone who believes in them as well as the tools to address their different learning styles. My students are faced with many challenges. One of those challenges shouldn't be not having access to the keys to unlock their potential!
My Project
My students are in need of sensory integration tools to help them be successful in their environment. All of us process sensory in our daily lives; however, my students process normal senses a little differently. Lights, sounds, and touches can be very different for my students and can be very upsetting to them. A normal volume level to most is okay, but that same volume to a child with a sensory processing disorder can be overwhelming and physically painful. Kids with sensory processing disorder have trouble receiving and responding to information that comes in through their senses.
Sensory integration is imperative in an early intervention classroom!
Light covers instantly make the classroom a much calmer environment and less stimulating. Pressure vests give students a sense of calm and spatial awareness. Chewelry gives students an appropriate oral stimulation as opposed to chewing on clothing. My students desperately need help with processing their environment! Provided with the proper tools, they can learn calming techniques and that's when the real learning can take place!
