My students need a camera and card, an eye model, books about the eye, senses, and artists, CD player with music, and art materials.
"I discovered about 150 dots is the minimum number of dots to make a specific recognizable person." - C. Close "Some say they see poetry in my paintings; I only see science" - G Seurat. Artists invite us to use our senses in viewing art, but what is the science behind our perception of art?
Artists ask us to use our senses when we imagine textures, smells, and even tastes of what is depicted in their art.
But some artists toy with our senses and manipulate our perception of what we are seeing to create art that mystifies and fascinates us. Some artists themselves experience wild sensory experiences when the senses are inexplicably linked in ways most of us can only imagine. I want to take my students on a journey through art masters while they are also gaining a scientific understanding of how people (and animals) receive different types of information through their senses, process the information, and respond to the information in different ways. They will explore pointillism, through the art of Seurat, Lichtenstein, and Matisse, synesthesia through Kandinsky, who literally saw colors in music and music in colors, patterns of Chuck Close who created hyper-real portraits, and experiment with pixels and light in digital photography.
First, students will explore models and read about how the eye receives and processes information and create models of how different types of sensory information are received and processed. Simultaneously, they will be working in groups to read and understand artists who were influenced by sensory perception, such as Seurat, Kandinsky, and Close. Students will then engage in artist “experiments” to determine “how many dots” are necessary to create recognizable images, using various art mediums. Students will collect and organize their “dot” data to create an argument for the thresholds of visual perception of figures. Students will also engage in experiments regarding the influence of music on art by listening to a variety of music while working. Finally, students will take high resolution images using the digital camera and manipulate the light and the number of pixels in the images to alter the viewer’s perceptions of the images. Students will create presentations of their findings.
It is my hope that the students will not only understand the science concepts of sensory processing and eye structures and the mathematical concepts of patterns and geometry, but that they can develop a deep appreciation for how these artists have capitalized on those scientific and mathematical concepts to create an experience for their viewers than is simply magical and amazing.
Allowing students to use technology to explore the concept further will increase engagement and understanding.Read More
