My Students

I teach the most special of students in a self-contained classroom filled with beautiful smiles and inquisitive minds. They are very limited on their academic skills but love to explore their surroundings and learn how things work.

One of my students is bound to a wheelchair for safety reasons due to epilepsy, but has use of her upper torso and extremities.

She loves to explore things with her hands but due to having PICA, manipulatives can be more harmful than entertaining.

I also have a few students that are on the Autism Spectrum. Throughout the day, they can become overly stimulated which can sometimes take the rest of the day to regain their focus.

My Project

My class is composed of so many different levels of learners, with each learning in a different way. I have some that can complete paper/pencil work with assistance but the majority of my class is hands-on activities. Within my hands-on learners, I have my most precious but more severe cognitive deficit learners. I do my best to offer them items that will give them some sort of stimulation as well as bring a beautiful smile to their faces. These students are very limited in their abilities as well as their mobility. Having the Caterpillar Activity Wall Panels and the 40-in-1 Wooden Busy Board, would give my "Perfectly Special" students manipulatives that they can work with without the possibility of something that I fear could harm them. These two items have so many different fine motor skill exercises, that it would keep them busy but yet entertained for longer lengths of time.
