Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a Special Education teacher in rural Northeast Alabama. My students range from Freshmen through Seniors in a self-contained severe needs resource room, many will stay with me until they are 21 years of age. The students perform at many levels due to cognitive disabilities and have varied physical and sensory needs.

We work on core academic skills, community living skills, independent living skills and communication skills using unique learning strategies.

We enjoy participating in school activities, like pep rallies, Special Olympics and prom with our peers.

My Project

Many of our students have physical limitations and specific sensory needs. Some students are sensitive to bright fluorescent lights, by installing the light diffusers our classroom will be more comfortable for those individuals, plus the cloud designs give us a fun ceiling scene. Several students are soothed by the motion of rocking in a chair and this chair is the perfect size.

By providing a variety of sensory items we are able to meet the needs of our varied students.

Light up toys help engage students during instruction and provide immediate feedback . The use of adaptive switches and toys helps some of our students with limited motor skills be more involved in the classroom discussions.
