I am a Speech Language Pathologist. Increasing a child's communication skills is watching them build confidence. Communication is a key part of life. Helping kids to be intelligible, understand language, and improve their social skills improves their quality of life. They are able to make friends, succeed in school, and prepares them for the future.
I help serve over 80 special education students who have a variety of strengths and needs.
Some of their diagnoses include intellectual disability, Autism Spectrum Disorder, traumatic brain injury, Down's Syndrome, hearing impaired, visually impaired, learning disabled, and cerebral palsy. Acquiring the right materials helps them meet their goals and improve their school experience.
My Project
The sensory tools help students with special needs to learn how to self-regulate and calm themselves. The canopy will be used as a quiet location for someone who is being overstimulated by the school environment. The seats will help each child have a designated space when on a crowded carpet with peers. We use our headphones daily. Many children need these and we often don't have enough. We want them to be able to participate in loud classroom and school-wide activities without being worried about the noise.
Each child responds to different textures and fidgets, therefore, we need a variety to help as many students as we can.
We are making a sensory wall so the child can pick out the right item for them. This will help teach them what they need in order to calm down and pay attention in class. These small items can make a big difference for children with special needs.
