"The disability is not the problem. The accessibility is the problem." --Mohamed Jemni.
I am the PROUD teacher of a wonderful group of five students all with severe and profound cognitive and physical disabilities.
This is my 11th year teaching students with moderate to severe developmental disabilities and I continue to LOVE every minute of it! My students are in grades 2 & 3 and spend the majority of their day in my self-contained special education room. The remainder of their day is spent with their general ed peers in classes such as art, clay, music, mainstreaming, PE and library.
My Project
My students do best when learning is hands-on, high interest and interactive. The use of a light board allows me to address concepts such as color identification, color blending and mixing, a fine motor practice of building and constructing from blocks, and shape identification including 3-D shape design in a way that is accessible to my students.
By utilizing light during fine motor activities such as tracing and drawing, my students will benefit from the added clarity a light table provides.
My students all have significant developmental disabilities and do not benefit from traditional paper and pencil work tasks. By providing my students with a light table and hands-on exciting materials, I am able to create interactive and engaging lessons that my students can successfully access at their individual level.
