We are a 4th grade team of 57 students in suburban Pittsburgh, PA from a 4-6 building. Being a fourth grader is tough work as it is the first year with many new faces all combining from the district's 5 primary schools. The students love having their own lockers (with locks!) and a bit more freedom in the bigger school. We love to read and collaborate. We take pride in our learning and work hard to prepare for the future.
My Project
The traditional classroom is changing, and we don't want to be left behind! Research has shown that movement and learning go hand in hand. The students need more opportunities to move in the classroom and integrating stability balls, stools, floor cushions, and a rug will allow students to select an area and seating option that bests suits their needs.
Collaboration is a key to learning in the 21st century classroom.
The flexible seating options will allow students to move into small groups easily to allow for group work and discussion. Many students prefer to have more room and spread their work out on the ground, and the rug and seat cushions will allow for a cleaner and more comfortable floor experience. The rug will also be a meeting point for small groups to meet with the teacher. I'm looking forward to giving the students more freedom and choices in their learning as they work in the classroom location that is best for them.
