My Students

I absolutely love teaching fifth graders! I believe fifth grade is a transitional year for students in our school district located in a small town in Southeast Missouri. In our district, fifth graders are transitioning from lower elementary to middle school. Fifth graders are the “top dogs” in our building, allowing them to be full of confidence and leadership.

The students that will be entering my classroom later this month will have different socioeconomic backgrounds, a variety of background knowledge to build upon, and various individual needs that I will need to meet on a daily basis.

I believe the resources included in this project will help me reach my students’ diversity. The science resources listed in this project will give students experiences they have never had before this time, help correct any misconceptions students may have when they enter my classroom, and allow struggling students to have hands-on activities to reinforce concepts in the textbook.

My Project

Fifth grade is the first year students take a standardized state test in the content area of science. Our state standards change continually, and textbooks do not always cover the standards sufficiently. Consequently, my students need additional resources in order to succeed.

Because my students have a variety of background information to build upon and different learning styles, my students need to have hands-on experiences in order to master fifth science objectives.

Having these resources will allow me to share information from the textbook with my students, then reinforce the lessons with hands-on materials. I firmly believe the resources listed in this project will allow my students to make a connection between the textbook and the real world while having fun!
