My students are filled with wonder and curiosity about the world around them. Their minds are constantly trying to figure things out by asking "Why?" and "What's going on?"
My students enjoy the journey of asking a question about a phenomenon and then being given the time, space, and tools to be able to discover and answer the question for themselves.
There is a tangible and genuine excitement when they grasp a concept, solve a problem, and discover something for themselves. One discovery usually leads to more questions and more discoveries, giving them a real desire to learn and improve the world around them.
My Project
Teaching science has moved away from telling students what they should know to letting them discover what to know. Science is engaging when students are given a phenomenon, a specific observed event, and encouraged to think and ask questions about what they observe and investigate. This is the first year of making this shift from textbook to more hands-on work and we don’t have all the supplies it takes to really make this a success. I am trying to get the foundational items we will be using for years to come to allow students to build, explore, observe, and experiment. The more tools we have to use, the more students can actually be doing the activities and not just watching a video of someone else doing an experiment. I am requesting science readers, owl pellets, butterfly growing kits, magnets, balls, toy cars, measuring tools, and more! My students have a lot of investigating to do!
I want to get items into every student's hands where the best kind of learning takes place.
Then, the fun and learn begins as students are given the time, space, and freedom to discover. They ask questions, make use of tools and materials, make models, and discover solutions to real world problems. Teachers become a guide from the side and are there to strengthen the students' experience. Students become scientists learning to observe, discover connections, collaborate with others, and make sense of the world around them.
