My students need supplies for leadership training and school spirit activities. The pens, folders, and sticky notes will help them organize their training materials. The paint, balloons, and brushes will be used for our Spirit Rocks.
My students are an amazing group of leaders with a capacity to help others within our school community. Through the years, the grade 9 students have had a difficult time transitioning to our large high school. They have been overwhelmed by the work load, the school size, and the seniors. We knew that we could use this admiration (and slight fear) of the senior class to our advantage. Who knows more about what high school is like than the kids who have been there for three full years? No one!
Our senior class has the ability to build relationships with freshmen to enhance and improve the school environment.
About half of the student population qualifies for free/reduced lunch, most would be first generation college students, and many do not have positive role models in their lives.
We like to think of our school as a family. We encourage student leadership and could not be who we are without it. The seniors can be the role models for the rest of the student body. Our seniors have the potential. They can shape the high school experience for over 300 freshmen. They just need the tools to become the leaders we need.
The senior to freshman mentor program is a valuable leadership opportunity for 12th graders and an important piece of the transition to high school for 9th graders. This program pairs seniors and freshmen together on a year long partnership. Seniors take part in two days of leadership training over the summer. The pens, folders, and sticky notes will be used to organize seniors' training materials. This training helps students develop their leadership and public speaking skills and prepares them to lead Freshmen Orientation. There they will lead several team building activities including a balloon pop game.
This year we would like to add a school spirit painting activity to brighten our campus AND help build collaborative and creative relationships.
We have several very large rocks around campus that can be used as Spirit Rocks. Mentor groups can request paint supplies to paint these rocks to advertise for clubs and activities, spread positive messages, or express creativity. Additionally, we would like to start chalking our sidewalks before important events to spread a positive atmosphere.
