Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are very diverse with many of them coming from economically disadvantaged homes. Nearly 70% of them receive free or reduced lunch and face various barriers to achieving academic success. They come from homes where food is scarce and where there is not enough money to pay for life's essentials such as clothing, utilities, and school supplies. Despite all of these obstacles, they have worked hard at solidifying their post-high school plans. A task that can be challenging for first-generation college students. Navigating the college process can be daunting but they managed to get through it successfully!
My students are hardworking, dedicated and most importantly, resilient.
Each and every one of them has the potential to find success in their post-high school plans. They have big plans to either attend college, sign with the military, pursue a trade/apprenticeship program, or enter into the workforce. I want to reward them for their efforts and celebrate their accomplishments. The Signing Day event will do just that for my seniors and promote a college-going culture to the younger students in our school who will soon be in their shoes!
My Project
We are planning our first ever Signing Day for our seniors this year and we need your support! The purpose of the Signing Day is to celebrate our graduating seniors who have made the commitment to complete their education past high school and we hope to make this celebration very special for our students. We will host our signing day on May 25, 2018 and will recognize students who plan to attend any college, university, community college, other education or training program, or to join the military. The event will begin with an exciting pep rally style event where we have speakers lined up and will celebrate our graduating students by showcasing their accomplishments and inspire more young people to take the first steps on their journey to higher education. Our juniors will be in attendance as we hope to continue to promote a college going culture and get them excited for their senior year! At the conclusion of the pep rally, our seniors will be able to continue the celebration outside where we hope to have food, games, a photobooth and music.

Funds will be used to cover the expense to have a taco truck and a photobooth come to our school. The food truck and photobooth will make our celebration unique and exciting for my students. Being able to hold this event will show all students that they matter and that their community supports them. Together we can honor our students who are making a commitment to further their education and reach higher!
