My students are intelligent, funny, thoughtful, creative, and ambitious young adults who are preparing to embark on the biggest, toughest, and most exciting journey of their lives: adulthood. Many of my kids have been through harrowing experiences that have shaped them into the amazing people that they are.
I am continuously surprised and inspired by their strength and resilience.
Many have built walls, and I consider it my mission to chip and chisel away at these walls in order to nurture the empathy and optimism that I know exist behind.
My students already impact the world around them, and I hope to provide the tools to help prepare them for the great and not-so-great moments that lie ahead of them.
My Project
Many of my high school seniors haven't read a book for pleasure or enjoyment in quite some time. I have chosen four very special and meaningful books to use within literature circles in the spring. I believe these books: The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, I Am the Messenger by Markus Zusak, Tales of the Madman Underground by John Barnes, and Deadline by Chris Crutcher provide depth, heart, and insight.
I would love for my students to leave their senior year having made their way through a powerful text together, to have one more sweet and lasting reading experience before entering adulthood.
It is my intention to encourage them to continue to read to feed their souls with literature far beyond graduation.
