Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class of culturally and socio-economically diverse students, most whom are underachievers, represents our next generation of skilled professionals. These students will need relevant, high interest and age-appropriate educational materials to meet their diverse learning needs and prepare them for the 2st century. Our classroom is comprised of predominately students at-risk for academic achievement. The majority of students have parents that are unavailable or unable to assist them with their schoolwork during this critical period of their lives. As fifth graders it is very important that the students are prepared with the basic skills and motivation needed to succeed before they transition from elementary school.
The student diversity in our school/classroom demands greater attention to the need for creative and varied teaching approaches that focus on student assets. The average text book does not address the needs of underachieving, at-risk students who have culturally diverse learning styles.
Weekly Reader SR. Edition News provides students with the opportunity to share in educational reading and discussions that build communication skills and community among students. Students build reading, vocabulary and speaking skills that will help them to become informed and productive citizens. WR News brings the outside world into the classroom with high-interest articles and lessons that build purposeful reading and writing activities.
