Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students work very hard and do their best in everything in which they set their minds. Unfortunately, though despite their hard work in their academics, many of our students face economic inequities with 80% qualifying for free and reduced lunch. They face a tough road ahead of them in their college academia with some now not having computers or printers at home. Yet many have big dreams of college success futures, taking AP classes and honors classes working hard to earn grades that will qualify them for college acceptance.
Our students also have grown out of their comfort zones and contributed back to their community.
Many have joined clubs and organizations on campus, growing their college application through volunteerism. Our students spend many hours putting on events like Every 15 Minutes to bring awareness to drinking/texting and driving, the Harvest Festival Carnival a free event for all local elementary and middle schools, among the many other volunteer opportunities our students do to build our community. Now, we would like to reward them for their college efforts by helping them to be further prepared.
My Project
Palmdale High School is having its first annual signing day! A huge rally in our football stadium will take place as graduating seniors are acknowledged on their college acceptance! Each senior accepted will be celebrated in front of the entire student body, encouraging 9th, 10th, and 11th graders to believe in themselves that they too can apply and be accepted to a four year university. Many fun opportunities will be given to these seniors in appreciation of their hard work and accomplishments and we will also celebrate all who applied.
For this portion of the rally, each student who applied to college and FAFSA received two tickets for a raffle to be completed at the College Signing Rally.
We will pull thirteen tickets, and the tablets will be raffled to a future college student! These tablets are highly important because these students have done so much to get to where they are, and given that our students are from a lower socio-economic community, we would like to give them these tablets as resources for their college work, helping them to be prepared. The students who win, will be able to use their tablets in their rigorous years in college.
