Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school district called for closure on March 13. Our students and teachers did not have time to prepare for the closure. We did not have time to gather and send materials with our students. Our district and school receive free breakfast and lunch for 100% of our students. Some lack materials such as books, notebooks, crayons, and in some cases, pencils. Weeks before we were to return, the superintendent called for closure through the end of the school year. What was to be a few weeks became through June 11.
We began Distance Learning utilizing Google Classroom.
First grade teachers and students did not use Google Classroom prior to school closure, so we are all learning and adjusting together. Parents have been a integral part of this transition. Technology and connectivity was an issue for many families. Now that we have reached and connected with families, Distance Learning is in full force!
These materials will complement Distance Learning lessons and provide hands on practice for my students.
My Project
The notebooks, pencils and crayons will inspire the students to write, draw and carry on with learning long after they log off. Since many of my students are emerging writers, the drawing tools will enable them to communicate through pictures and written words.
Pencils and notebooks will also give a place for students to use pictures to problem solve during math lessons.
This allows students to find multiple ways and methods to show their work and upload them.
While the digital lessons have materials built in, having materials at home will allow students to bridge the learning they are familiar with at school and the online format.
