Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is located in a highly impoverished area just blocks away from Skid Row in Downtown Los Angeles. Thirty percent of our students are homeless, and nearly all face adverse childhood experiences. Our school came to life through an organization which is a non-profit serving families providing them with mental health services.

Although my students live in an area affected by crime, neglect, and generations of poverty, they come to school eager, inquisitive, and with a love of learning about the world around them.

Many, however, will not be able to experience the world first-hand beyond their at-risk neighborhoods.

My Project

This project gives students the opportunity to experience environmental science in a hands-on setting. They will be able to "see" science in the world around them and not just read about it in a textbook. They will be able to explore the natural world, study living creatures, learn more about scientific method, and most of all create lifelong memories with their peers. The camp experience also strengthens team-building and social bonds among students, which leads to a better learning environment for everyone. With your financial support, my 7th graders will have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to engage in a natural educational setting that fosters academic and personal growth.
